About BTET
BTET (Bihar Teacher Eligibility Test) is a state-level eligibility exam conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) for candidates seeking teaching posts at the primary level (Classes 1–5, Paper 1) and upper primary level (Classes 6–8, Paper 2) in Bihar's government schools. Past cycles were held in 2017 and around 2023–24, with multi-year gaps between cycles.
How BTET relates to CTET: BTET is Bihar's own state-level exam, while CTET is the central exam run by CBSE. Both serve the same purpose — certifying eligibility to apply for teacher recruitment. Given the 2026 policy update mentioned above, CTET-qualified candidates may increasingly be accepted (or required) for Bihar government school recruitment — confirm this against the latest official notification for your specific recruitment cycle.
Eligibility Criteria (Standard BTET Pattern)
Based on past BTET cycles — always confirm against the current notification
- Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen, generally a Bihar domicile.
- Age: Minimum 21 years as on the notification's cut-off date; upper limit and relaxations follow Bihar government rules.
- Paper 1 (Classes 1–5): Senior Secondary (10+2) with minimum qualifying marks and a 2-year D.El.Ed / B.El.Ed, or Graduation with D.El.Ed — exact percentage criteria have varied between cycles.
- Paper 2 (Classes 6–8): Graduation with D.El.Ed, or Graduation with B.Ed, or an equivalent NCTE-recognised qualification.
- Candidates in their final year of the qualifying course are typically also allowed to apply, subject to conditions.
Exam Pattern
Standard format used in past BTET cycles
- Offline, objective-type (MCQ) exam — 150 questions per paper.
- Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes (150 minutes) per paper.
- 1 mark per correct answer; no negative marking.
- Paper 1 has 5 sections of 30 marks each; Paper 2 has 3 sections of 30 marks plus one 60-mark subject-specialisation section (Maths & Science, or Social Studies).

Different past cycles and different sources report different minimum qualifying percentages for BTET (figures anywhere from roughly 40% to 60% depending on category and cycle).
